Role Model: Seba Dyer, Senior Consultant at Pod Talent

With Pride month imminent now seemed the best time to release the next participants in our ‘Role Model Series’. Seba Dyer, Senior Consultant, Supply Chain Technology at Pod Talent, is next to take the spotlight and hopes that ‘we can diversify the industry, change the narrative around what a "typical recruiter" is, and allow people to no longer experience the isolation that can come from not seeing anyone like us in the sector.’

Hear more from Seba below what they have learned during their time in the industry and the importance of being a visible role within the recruitment sector.

What changes have you seen within the recruitment sector for LGBTQ+ people?

I have not seen a huge amount of change and I think there is extensive work to be done, working for Pod I am incredibly privileged to be supported by a very LGBTQ+ friendly business.

What changes would you like to see and how can the recruitment sector do better for LGBTQ+ people?

I think that toxic recruitment culture still plays a role in the marginalisation of LGBTQ+ folks. Especially at a junior level where a sometimes hostile competitive environment creates exclusion. Additionally, traditional incentive methods like trips and outings don't always think about how LGBTQ+ folks would experience these; for example a trip to Dubai or work nights out to venues where we may not feel safe. It would be great to see LGBTQ+ folks be consulted on what would motivate them personally, and things should be booked with all team members in mind.

Why is it important that people have LGBTQ+ role models within the recruitment sector?

There are very few visible leaders in the space, and the pool becomes even smaller when we look at Trans+ identities or intersectional identities like historically marginalised folks from a gender, racial, or religious perspective. Seeing people bravely advocate for us, and creating environments where we can bring our whole selves to work - which creates a higher performing culture - is integral to allowing us to achieve our full potential. It also means that candidates or clients who are part of our community feel more comfortable working with us, knowing we will understand their experiences and how they may not feel included. Being able to advocate for LGBTQ+ candidates is an important part of my mission and the wider goals of Pod as a business.

What do you hope being a visible role model in the recruitment sector will achieve for LGBTQ+ people, allies and those within the sector in general?

I hope that we can diversify the industry, change the narrative around what a "typical recruiter" is, and allow people to no longer experience the isolation that can come from not seeing anyone like us in the sector. Using the privilege we have as leaders to encourage dialogue and compassion amongst our allies and taking away the fear of addressing the inequalities in the industry head on. Groups like Campaign can help people feel less alone and provide much needed advice and resources around how to advocate for yourself in your business, even if you are the only person living your identity.

Thank you to Seba for being our role model. If you’d be keen to hear more about what Campaign are doing visit our site at Campaign (wecampaign.co) or follow us on LinkedIn.
